Every cruise line has multiple activities for different traveling groups and individuals on the ships. You can enjoy a wine tasting, or Karaoke, or casino tournaments, but some will also have a gathering for “Friends of Dorothy”.
When I first saw that on the ships daily itinerary sheet I was a little shocked and very pleased. Some cruise lines will set up a time at one of their bars or at poolside for all gay friendly people on the ship to come and meet each other and make friends. We met a couple from Australia and they told us about their travels and they where just great people. Throughout the next 10 days we would run into them at dinner or at the nightclub and we built up a friendly relationship that survives even to this day.
Even though we weren’t on an “all gay cruise” we made the cruise gay all the time. You know when a bunch of gay people get together it becomes the “gay bar” the “gay restaurant” the “gay casino” and we attract straight people like moths to a flame. I love that about our friends. They are always open to meet new people and have the mentality to bring them into our little mob and make them feel part of a bigger community. No judgment, no hassle just people having a good time together.
Although, all gay cruises, are great and have their place in our community, it’s nice to be able to have the choices of travel dates and destinations and prices to go wherever we want and not be apprehensive about how we will be treated and, most importantly , having a gay ‘ol time.
